Best Non-Toxic Products To Clean Your Home & Keep Your Pet Safe

If you’re like us here at Homescape Pets, then you know how satisfying it is to kick back and relax at the end of a long day of cleaning. The clothes are washed, carpets vacuumed—even your pet toys are put away (for now)!

Even more satisfying is when you know that the bucket of cleaning products you keep tucked under the sink isn’t full of harsh, toxic ingredients that are harmful to your fur-babies. We were shocked when we learned that our old floor cleaners, when dry, were still releasing vapors that Quinn and Minnie could be inhaling. We even learned that laundry detergents can leave residue on clothes and bedding. With as stressful as life can get, why worry about what your pets are ingesting or inhaling during a snuggle session?

That’s why we went natural with our cleaning products, and now we want to share our favorites with you. Don’t worry, we know there’s so much to clean, and so little time, so we went ahead and organized our list by all your different household needs:

Pet-Friendly Glass Cleaners

Everyone loves their mirrors and windows squeaky clean. With its attractive aqua blue appearance, Windex might seem like the affordable go-to cleaner to get those paw prints off the glass. Unfortunately, those paws are also being exposed to the ammonia in Windex, a harmful ingredient to the once-popular glass cleaner.

Try Nature Clean Glass & Window Cleaner, the safer alternative, which boasts itself as 99.9% natural. Nature Clean Glass & Window Cleaner guarantees a streak-free cleaning, with no ammonia, dyes, or perfumes. The secret? Nature Clean works by using witch hazel wildflower.

A vinegar solution is also a fantastic and effective alternative to chemical cleaners. To make a window cleaner with vinegar, just mix equal parts distilled white vinegar with water. (We could go on and on about all of the ways you can use vinegar as a pet safe cleaner in your home - It’s that good!)

Pro-Tip: Skip the paper towels and save the planet. Try using a CleansGreen Disposable Microfiber Cloth to wipe down your windows and mirrors.

Non-toxic Carpet and Floor Cleaners

This might be a sensitive subject to those with pets who get a little too enthusiastic on the rug. Trust us, we know the struggle and juggle of trying every spot treatment on the market to get those ugly stains out!

Sometimes we think Nature’s Miracle really is a miracle—they have a Stain & Odor Remover that will tackle the whole ugly gamut of pet accidents, including the messy food accidents we humans can make, too! How does it work? Nature’s Miracle uses an enzymatic formula to keep us green. If you just happen to know what the heck an enzymatic formula is, great! If not, let’s put it this way: the formula uses safe and helpful bacteria that create the enzymes to break down the mess. Ah, science!

If you run into a stain-emergency on your hands and not enough time to run out to the store, try baking soda for a quick fix. We usually have baking soda stocked in our kitchen for its own variety of uses, including stain removal. For carpet stains and odors, simply mix enough baking soda with water to make a paste. And guess what? You can throw in a little vinegar, too! (Honestly, vinegar deserves its own blog post. 😉) Apply this baking soda paste to your stain for absorption, and all you have to do is wipe it up and vacuum afterward.

Pet-Safe Laundry Detergents

Ah, baking soda and vinegar: a true love story. Did you know you can add both to your laundry cycle? Pour ½ cup of distilled white vinegar to the load and say good-bye to using harsh detergents. To combat odors, stains, and even brighten colors, add ½ cup of baking soda to the wash. Easy, cheap, and all-natural!

We also love Natural Laundry Detergent by Puracy, which is both plant-derived and allergen-free, making this an especially attractive option for those of us with sensitive fur-babies. Puracy is thinking of us and the earth with their biodegradable packaging and concentrated solution, reducing waste by over 80%. To top it all off, your purchase helps support local artists. If you’re a green, clean, art-loving machine, Puracy is the way to go.
