Why Pet Parents Are Choosing CBD

If you are a pet parent with a dog or cat who is aging or ill for any reason, then you know how important it is to find them the relief they need while keeping them as comfortable as possible. We at Homescape Pets know from experience what it’s like to see our pup suffering from a debilitating illness and not be able to find relief for her that did not come with the oftentimes harsh side effects common in traditional treatments. After extensive research, we committed ourselves to find more natural options to address aches and pain, inflammation, stress, and other common conditions in pets.

One of these options is CBD, and chances are you’re already familiar with it—CBD products have become increasingly popular for both humans and animals. If you aren’t familiar, you’ve come to the right place!

Why Pet Parents Are Choosing CBD

So, what is pet CBD and how does it work?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is extracted from hemp and cannabis plants. The first thing you should know is that CBD won’t make your pet experience psychoactive effects. That’s because hemp is different from the marijuana plant which contains delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the component that produces mind-altering effects and makes the user “high.”

CBD attaches to the endocannabinoid receptors of the brain, which regulate many physiological processes like appetite, pain, and mood. Humans have turned to CBD to treat a wide variety of other conditions such as seizures, mood disorders, and pain.

More and more pet owners are choosing CBD as a natural option for their pet's health. Here’s why:

The Effectiveness of CBD

According to the “Pet CBD Market Report” conducted by Brightfield Group,  64% of pet parents have administered pet CBD to help with stress and other ailments in pets. In fact, A 2018 Cornell University study found that dogs with osteoarthritis demonstrated decreased pain after being given CBD. Studies of the effectiveness in cats is still in the early stages but is showing promising results and. We are excited to see more research around the effectiveness of CBD in pets as the pet CBD industry continues to grow!

Accessibility and Cost

With so much talk about accessible and affordable healthcare these days, little attention has been given to veterinary healthcare options. Many pet parents have simply gotten used to it: vet visits and veterinary medications are expensive, and that’s that. And because our pets’ health is so sacred, you’re probably willing to pay anything to help your pet get better! Unfortunately, the mainstream veterinary industry relies on our fierce dedication to our pets’ health and our willingness to pay anything to keep them from suffering.

This is not to say that pet CBD oil doesn’t come with its own expense. However, pet CBD products are much more accessible than traditional veterinary services. For one thing, you don’t need a prescription, which means you don’t have to pay for a veterinarian visit, although you should always check with your vet prior to administering any supplement. Another benefit is that you can find a wide variety of pet CBD products right online… for instance, right here at Homescape Pets

After chatting with your vet and determining the best course of action, you might find that buying a tincture of pet CBD oil is fairly inexpensive and highly effective.

CBD Products are Safe

One of the most difficult aspects of treating your pets with prescription medications is the fear of hurting them further. You have to anxiously evaluate whether or not the side effects are worth the benefits, especially when dealing with pain killers or dealing with potentially terminal conditions in pets.

Many traditional pain medications can come with side effects ranging from mild to severe. For instance, common side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs include vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, and depression. Severe side effects can include ulcers, liver and kidney failure, and worse. Just read the labels and you'll see what we mean.

When selecting a CBD oil for your pet, it's imperative that you ensure the quality by checking their third-party lab test results, most often called the COA (Certificate of Analysis). This will tell you the potency and purity of the CBD that you're considering. If you don't see or can't easily request a company's COA, you may want to reconsider that company. The COA should show the testing facility, batch number, testing date, and total amount of CBD and THC in the batch. You can see our third-party COA lab results here.

With CBD, the most common side effects are drowsiness and loose stool, which typically comes from administering too much CBD too quickly.  CBD should be given "low and slow" to your pet. This means that you should start by giving a little less than the recommended amount for their weight and gradually increase the amount until you get the wellness results you're seeking. If you administer CBD in this manner, your pet should not experience any negative side effects.

Despite the limited (but growing!) research around the effectiveness of CBD, pet parents are saying: It can’t hurt to try. And that's what excites us: Not causing any additional harm.

Whether or not you opt for traditional pharmaceuticals, pet CBD can help mitigate the symptoms of a wide variety of illnesses as well as the side effects of veterinary medication. That’s why we were so excited to release Mussel Mobility Complete with CBDa, our supplement which helps to manage your pet’s hip and joint discomfort along with easing their stress with the addition of CBDa.
